I was hoping Dan would get home by 5:30 so we could be there right at 6:00 when they started letting people in. Unfortunately he didn't get home until after 7:00.
"Don't be upset that I'm late. 30 people got laid off at work today. It's better that I'm home late with a job than home early without one." Those were the words that he greeted me with when he walked in the door.
I said a silent prayer thanking God for Dan's job and we headed out the door.
The lights were as beautiful this year as they were last year and the kids enjoyed all the displays.
There was a lot of traffic and it took a while to get through everything but that didn't matter to the kids because they had one thing on their minds - the red barn!
The red barn is located about three quarters of the way through the lights and serves hot chocolate and has a giant roaster for marshmallows. We didn't stop last year but this year we did.
The hot chocolate was delicious. I don't think it was the Swiss Miss that I normally serve. Note to self - must look into actually making real hot chocolate sometime this winter.
Then we got two skewers of marshmallows and found a place around the roaster.
I think the hot chocolate and the marshmallows will be part of our Tanglewood tradition from now on!

Looks like you guys had a fun time. So glad your husband's job was spared! What a blessing.
(and yea, first to leave a comment)
Glad you have a great time and what a wonderful tradition. Also glad your husband is employed, I know that was a scary time. Praying for you all!
That looks wonderful! What a great tradition.
ooh! Sounds like fun! I think we'll go next week or the week after...never been but every year we say we are! Glad to know it's worth it!
Looks like fun. Makes me want some hot chocolate right now.
THANK GOD that he has a job. Times are so tough right now. My boss has put me on notice that he may cut my hours after Jan 1. I am praying not! We can't afford for my hours to be cut!
The light festival looks fun!!!
Sounds like fun! We love those times. We are going this Saturday for some holiday fun. Can't wait!
I could taste those marshmallows!!
What a great post. It made me teary and happy all at the same time. :)
We didn't stop at the barn this year. I didn't know they served hot chocolate and marshmellows. We'll be starting that tradition next year.
We're in the same boat with Ty's job. His company just laid off 250 people last week. I say the same thank you prayer many times a day!
Very awesome.
What a fun time for the family. Real hot chocolate is the best! YUM
That looks like the PERFECT night to me!
That looks like SO much fun! I am glad your husband still has his job.
Real hot chocolate is almost as easy as Swiss Miss- you just have to use cocoa, milk, and sugar. You can even still do it in the microwave- although I always think the stove is better.
i wish we had something cool like that here! we went to our town's tree lighting, even though someone had "accidentally" set the timer wrong so it was lit for a few days before the actual lighting. LOL!!
Glad your hubby was spared btw, i heard my old job laid off more people about a week ago- Merry Christmas to them huh? you would think they could wait til after the holiday at least!!
We are headed to see the lights next Tuesday night. All these times I have been through Tanglewood I did not know about the red barn activity. Thanks for the tip!
I hope your family has a very Merry Christmas.
Wow, Praise God for Dan's job!!
Looks like a wonderful night...and I'm with you on needing to make some REAL hot chocolate this winter!
That sounds like a lot of fun. I'm so glad to hear that he still has his job, I can't imagine how scary that must be.
