My daughter's burgeoning sense of style!

I'm not a girly girl. I never have been and I never will be. So you can imagine my surprise and dismay when my daughter comes home from school and says things like, "I want to wear my hair like Savannah tomorrow." or "Can you make my hair go like Sydney's?"

I can barely make my own hair look decent! How am I supposed to do hers? I put her hair up like Savannah's the other day and she discovered two cheesy dollar store scrunchies in a drawer.

"I want these in my hair!"

"No, sweetie. They don't match your dress." I may not be a girly girl but I at least know what colors match and the blue scrunchie looked ridiculous with the pink polka dotted dress.

"I want them!" Fake crying, lots of whining, lots of feet stomping.

"Fine! Whatever! " I'm not afraid to do a little of my own feet stomping and whining.

It was almost time for preschool and honestly, I've seen some little girls roll in looking like they picked their entire outfit from the dress-up bin so I doubted the teachers would care if my daughter's scrunchies didn't match her dress.

So I put the scrunchies in her hair and laughed at how silly they looked on her. She smiled in the mirror and said, "Don't I look pretty, Mommy?"

"Yes, sweetheart. You do!" Because you know what? She did look pretty. She was so proud of her little hairdo that she could not stop looking at herself in the mirror.

Later that evening, when my husband got home from work he took one look at her and then looked at me and said, "What's going on with her hair?" When I told him that she wore it to school that way, he said, "Isn't it your responsibility as a Mother to make sure she doesn't look ridiculous when she goes outside this house?"

Ha! I could only snort and roll my eyes at him. My dear sweet husband knows nothing about getting a stubborn, strong-willed 3-year-old dressed and coiffed for preschool, so I let that one slide.

But I did hide the scrunchies as soon as we took them out of her hair at bath time and she hasn't thought about them since! Mommy is so sly.

Luckily my husband is out of town this week and didn't have to see this delightful dress, shoe, sock combination she picked yesterday. He might have revoked my mommy license!

I wouldn't worry about her outfit not matching, Beth. Everybody will be slayed by her total and overwhelming cuteness, and will not notice any mismatched fashion items :)

PS: Though I gotta say - that scrunchie picture made me burst out laughing. A.D.O.R.A.B.L.E.

Oh, she is such a sweet thing. That scrunchie ... whoaaaaa LOL!
I'm going through the same with Giselle who's just 3 now. I HAVE to wear that shirt, NOT with the flowers today!!!
You should see the number she's in this morning...her brother says she's all gangsta. Great!!!

She still looks adorable, no matter what.
I think all little girls go through that, they are trying to find their own style. Sometimes it is good and sometimes it isn't. Cheyanne wore a leopard print outfit (it is cute) with her pink camo tennis shoe.

Aaaw, how cute is that. My 8 year old has those same sparkle Dorothy shoes. SHE HAD TO HAVE THEM!!! Her siblings hate when she wears them because it embarrasses them.

Now, she wants me to take her to the store so she can buy a "wig"...more like a hair switch. Hubby can't believe I'm going to let her spend her money on it. LOL!

Daughter number one is a pleaser so she pretty much wore whatever I put on her and as a teenager has a very good sense of style without my help, daughter number 2 only cares about pleasing herself and I think it is her goal to wear whatever mom doesn't like, daughter number three lives to be a princess and has good days and not so good days with matching her top half to her bottom half but I have learned to not care anymore. It is only clothes. And since no amount of clothes can cover up bad behavior I have chosen to stick to working with attitudes and not fashion.

By the time you get to the fifth daughter you don't really care what she looks like going out in the morning!

I'd be happy to send him some pictures of the outfits my child pulls together...his eyes would pop out of his head - and it might make him ease up on you!

She's awfully cute.

This cracks me up ! Look at how my daughter went out of the house one day ... click here

She looks so happy in that scrunchie! I always think it's better to have them go to school happy and confident than hating what they are wearing and all sad ! Can't happen ALL the time ... school photo day might be a time to "put your foot down" :) but at 3 ... they have their own sense of style and I think it's great to let them have it as much as possible !

I am biding my time...so far Sugar has little interest in what she is wearing...but my time is coming.

your daughter is very pretty....indeed.

My daughter has strong opinions about what she wants to wear already and she's about the same age. It is hard for me not to tell her no, just because I don't like something. But you've got to let her be herself - and keep those photos to show a future prom date. :)

It matters not what the outside shows, it matters only what the true heart holds.

Ok, I AM a girlie girl and you just have to teach them how to match! Pink plus pink, blue plus blue - they catch on very very quickly.

And, GASP, I love your layout! How did you do it?

Oh SHE IS ADORABLE girly girl hair or not! That bow totally RAWKS!

Tee hee! Oh this morning my 5-year-old told me she wanted to wear a pink sweater over a white shirt "just like Mason." UGH!

Also, I feel your pain in the hair fixing department. I have an entire post about that somewhere in my archives. I can do a simple pony tail and a plain braid but I am not a hair fixing diva type mother. My girls frequently pick out very "creative" outfits. We'll just leave it at that. Think Punky Brewstser! ;)

p.s. your daughter is adorable!

What a cute little babe!!! She is so adorable... I think kids her age can wear contrasting colors since they're still young, energetic and all. I find it fun seeing kids wearing colorful get ups...but not until they're a grown up. :) Sooner or later, they'll get tired of it all and whine about something else... Yay!!!
