I probably forgot to mention all of this...

Did I mention that I was roped into volunteered to help teach Spanish Enrichment to the four Kindergarten classes every Wednesday?

Did I mention that I don't speak Spanish? That I took French in high school?

Did I mention that I found out that being Room Mom essentially means calling other parents (that I don't know) and asking them to volunteer at different centers during all the class "celebrations"? And that not only do they have to volunteer at these different centers but that they also have to provide all of the items that will be used at said centers.

Did I mention that I hate calling people I don't know to ask them to do things that I know they probably don't want to do?

Did I mention that I'm ready for summer vacation?

Oh honey, repeat after me: "I really can't right now." Say that several times a day until you feel comfortable with it and then enjoy!

I feel for you! I volunteered once to be room parent in kindergarten, and yup that was enough for me...someone has to do it, but calling people is not my thing either! Good luck with the Spanish by the way!!! Adios.

Don't worry - all the Spanish that Kindergarteners need to know can be learned from Sesame Street.

And when in doubt, just teach them French, they probably won't know the difference. Unless the class has a bilingual kid - then you are in trouble :)

I just wish we had Spanish enrichment at our schools.

I love volunteering to be the party administrator. I don't do anything but call and remind the others that signed up to do the actual work.

Well, being a fellow room mom (head last hear, assisting kind of this year) it's either that, or you try to be at all the different centers at the same time.

And, I know you think they don't want to do it, but it does have to do with their child and his/her education. Pull that card out. And I've even used the, "IF we don't have the volunteers, the kids don't have a party" routine. It works.

Kindergarten spanish... sing to the tune of where is thumbkin...

Red is rojo, red is rojo,
blue azul, blue azul
yellow amarillo, yellow amarillo
green verde, green verde

Keep with it Beth. IMHO, you will NEVER regret being involved at school. NEVER.

You are a better mom than I.

Can you email them? Maybe make it a little less painful?

I learned when Xander went to Kindergarten - don't get roped into all of it. It's very different from helping out at preschool. I somehow stepped into a big position on the PTO with no PTO experience and I got burned by it. I hate that it was such a bad experience because I really thought I would enjoy it and wanted to be able to help out. Never again though. As far as the Spanish goes - go to the library and check out some Dora the Explorer videos, at least that can get you started! - Wendy

Any way to get out of it? Make up a pet with a horendous disease that needs you? I hate calling people I don't know and asking for favors, too.

I have to make phone calls for my job. Just remember not to take anything personally. It's them, it's not you!
