Ehhhhh....What's up doc?

We picked our carrots yesterday and they all looked like this. Every single one of them.

Did we do something wrong?

Is this the way homegrown carrots are supposed to look? If so, I think I'll just stick to buying them at the grocery store!

Yep. That's how our carrots always look. Not sure why homegrown carrots do that. Weird, huh? Not sure how they get store bought carrots to grow straight. Maybe they're a certain variety of carrot? One of the mysteries of life. :)

Ha! Those are some ugly carrots but at least they are good.

I just Googled "how do I get my carrots to grow straight", and I found a website with some interesting advice. First of all, it said that carrots prefer soil that is sandy and not stony. And you are not supposed to plant carrots in soil that has had compost added to it in the last twelve months. Also, you are not supposed to plant too many to close together. And you are supposed to pull some of the carrots while they are small to allow the other carrots the room to grow larger. Another thing I read on another site was that carrot growers have tweaked and tested until they have gotten a certain variety of carrot that will grow nice and big and long, because that's how us picky consumers like them. :) So, it sounds like if we want big, long, and straight carrots right from our own gardens, it takes a little bit of work. Either that, or we're just gonna have to get over the fact that they don't look like the store bought ones, and just eat 'em. :)

But look at their bright orange color... that color is gorgeous! Maybe these are the carrotts that they cut down into the "baby peeled" carrotts that we buy in the packages.

I say, "Good On Ya, Beth!"

That is what the carrots looked like when I grew them too. I figured that I didn't thin them out enough.

A man at the farmer's market had some really nice-looking carrots a few weeks ago. I haven't seen him since, but if I do, I'll ask him.

Huh, I don't know. Maybe cause they're organic and not genetically altered? Wait, do carrots have genes? They're definitely interesting. How do they taste?

That photo made me LOL!!!

I read the above post about carrots loving sandy soil. I should grow some. Where I live in Florida our yard is mostly sand, not dirt!
