How Does She Do It?

I took Peter and Sarah to the Children's Museum yesterday.

One of the things I enjoy doing while the kids are involved in all sorts of imaginary play is observing the other mothers. (That and drinking Dunkin Donuts coffee, which I don't even think I'm allowed to bring into the museum, but so far, no one has had the guts to tell me I can't!)

Most of the other moms are dressed like me - khaki shorts, flip flops, and black or white t-shirts. The basic stay-at-home-mom-is-going-out-of-the-house-but-not-just-to-the-grocery-store look. We were all clean but not dressed up. Our hair was washed but not styled.

But yesterday, I spotted a mom that stood out from the crowd.

She had three kids with her. Their ages roughly 8 months, 2 and 4. And their clothes were all clean. The 4 year old was wearing a polo shirt and the collar was even turned up.

She was cute and petite with a short, sassy hair cut. And not only was her hair clean, but it had a healthy shine.

Her toe nails were pedicured and her finger nails were manicured. And it looked to be a professional job.

She was sipping from a water bottle while I was slurping down my illegal iced coffee

She was wearing a very fitted tee shirt, little shortie shorts, lipstick and a big smile.

And of course she was smiling. This woman clearly had it together.

And I have to admit. I was jealous. Not because she was cute, trim, healthy and pedicured. But because this woman was cruising through the Children's Museum, chasing after three kids, wearing....

WEDGE HEELS!

I have enough trouble wearing my wedge heels to church on Sundays. And if you own a pair of wedges, then you know what I'm talking about.

They are cute, but you pay for the cute in blisters, red marks and general uncomfortableness.

So, yes. I will admit it. I was jealous.

And I consoled myself by thinking that she probably has a team of people helping her to pull off her look -a rich husband, a stylist, a trainer, a maid, a chef, a nanny and

a really good podiatrist!

ooh I love this post! I was at the park with a friend of mine yesterday and I tell ya, I thought the both of us look pretty together. Until. I saw the other moms. I mean wow.

It was a group of three of them, they looked very put together in the fashion sense and oh so calm as they relaxed on the bench.

The only saving grace is that their kids were holy terrors. : ) I take what I can. Horrible of me I know.

Hope your screen comes clean, thanks for stopping by little world. And this really is a perfect post for moms.

I now exactly what you are talking about. It does all I can to keep my boys from getting in the nearest mud puddle on the way out the door in the mornings. So if they are clean when we get to our destination, I feel like I've accomplished something. As for me I have that stay-at-home mom look down pat. Basic solid on solid with flip flops, driving my minivan, with more diaper bags and sippy cups than I can keep up with.

We were just talking about moms like that the other day, while my friends and I are at the pool, in swimsuits, getting in the water with children. Meanwhile, their are other moms, who have NEVER entered the water, ALWAYS dressed up (it is the pool for goodness sake!), and the children are terrors.

I met more women like that...all put together & perfect looking in their wedged heels while living down south than ever before. But I was like you - khaki's, gap t-shirt, flip flops, and usually a ponytail. And like you said - that's on a good day!

Cute post, Beth!

I LOVE this post! It's the same way here everywhere. Most of the women I know are always so well put together. But my closest girlfriends and I could care less about that (which is probably why we are so close!). Not that I don't love getting dressed up and looking hot for dh, it's just easier to throw a comfortable pair of shorts and cute top on :) My kids don't care if my hair is in a ponytail and I prefer it up anyway because it's just too darn hot to wear it down!

I know exactly what you mean...and I only have one child! I feel lucky enough to go out of the house looking presentable...

Forget that woman... I am still fuming that you managed to sneak that iced coffee in. Next time I am going to try that!

I'm with you...she has a team!!

(whatever makes us feel better, right!?!)

My sense of fashion was the first thing I sacrificed when I became a mother.

She's a fake - a plant from fancy fashon & makeup companies to make us feel like loosers in our mommy uniforms.
Wedges...good grief!

I would so be that mom, if I could only pull it together.

I've seen those kinds of moms and wonder how they do it. Sometimes I think they must BE the nanny, not the mom! LOL

she probably was the nanny! If i were you, i would have talked to her a bit, found out things.. just to confirm to myself that she was not the mother! (a good possibility)

@least thats what i tell myself. I know i would never be so well kept if and when i hav kids. Very nice post, love coming to read ur blog!

I always think of that when I see Victoria Beckham or Katie Holmes...they're always in heels or wedges. How do they carry their children & play with them dressed like that every day? I like me tennies & my flippies, thank you! ;)

I think Beth Moore was the one that said... the more together they try to look on the outside, the more out of control things likely are on the inside. They look that way because it's what they can control.

Or maybe that is too deep and I'm analyzing too much.

oh my yes....I don't get how some women do it. I look at the celebrities that wear heels like everyday and wonder the damage to there feet. ugh.

I don't have the time for all of those things now, and I'm not even a mom yet!

I guess full time school and work'll do that to you though!

Eventually your kids'll be older and you can do those things again! :) Until then, cherish every moment you have with them!!

Happy POW!

A girl at my church has 2 little girls and every Sunday, she's dressed head-to-toe in fashion. She's tall and blonde... and wears stilettos! And get this - they always make it to the early service at 8:30. She made the comment one time that she normally has her and her girls all dressed and ready to go and they have to wait on her husband to get ready. We're normally rushing to get to church by 9:30 so that we can grab a donut (breakfast) right after the early service! And most Sundays I'm trying to put on some make-up (or "paint my face" as I like to say) between home and church... 1/2 mile away! So you can imagine how I look most Sundays. You've seem me enough non-Sundays to know that I fall right in the typical mommy look. Oh well, we can dream!

Oh Lord, I know that woman. In my town it is Jen G. - does triathelons, wears shortie shorts and heels to baseball games, works out in full makeup. Gorgeous, skinny, I hate her.

I call people like that "plants" they're the ones who make the rest of us think that it's a realistic goal. Chances are she wasn't even the Mother of those children, it's all a deception to make being a parent look easier.

"stay-at-home-mom-is-going-out-of-the-house-but-

I tried wedge heels again for the first time in who knows how long. I have 2 hello kitty bandaids on my feet now :(

Those are the mum's I want to accidentally trip up on their way past me.

Sunday is my one day that I actually look like I'd like to every day. 1 out of 7 isn't bad, right?

mom2natnkatncj said...

Oh those kinds of people just make me sick, hehehehehe. They should not be allowed in places where us "normal" everyday mom's go because they just make us feel bad.

For sure, this chick has a cleaning lady and a babysitter on call.

Her husband makes oodles of money so getting "alone time" at the salon is not a problem, since she can pay the babysitter and not wonder if she'll make school tuition and uniforms next year.

That's how she does it.

Don't forget she is probably on some drugs too. That is if she was smiling and not just gritting her teeth. HA HA HA!! (sorry that is the demon in me)

I like to think I'll be that together when I have kids...we'll see though. Only time will tell. Though I'm learning a lot from all the experiences I read about in all of the fabulous Mommy Blogs I read. :)
