When I was in kindergarten we took naps. Lots of naps. That's really all I remember. I don't remember actually doing any work until first grade.
But things have changed. There are no more naps in kindergarten (at least not at our elementary school) and there is a lot of work.
I love it when Sarah brings home things she has written.
The kids are encouraged to write about a topic, in the case below the teddy bears they brought to school to use in their discussions about hibernation. They are encouraged to sound out the word and write as much of it as they can.
At the beginning of the year they were to try to write the first and last sound in the word, but now that we are half way through the school year, they are supposed to try to add the middle sounds as well.
I love watching this whole process unfold as the work that Sarah brings home continues to improve.
And in case you aren't good and figuring out how kindergartners sound things out, here is the translation:
I like to sleep with my bear and he falls out of the bed And he likes to play with me.
(The drawing is her bookshelf, the bed, Sarah, the bear and her dresser.)
It cracks me up that she spelled with "weu" both times. Hey, at least she's consistent!

The school I teach at is in the neighboring county to yours. Our kindergartners start off the year with naps, but now that we are in second semester, they shorten them considerably to prepare for 1st grade. I get such a kick out of walking down the kindergarten hall trying to figure out what the kids are saying. Thank goodness they also illustrate their writings! I'm used to reading what 5th graders say, so the pictures help! Looks like Sarah is on her way!
Wow, that's great! Good job, Sarah!
This is precious. Short and sweet story. Come to think of it....I remember a lot of naps in kindergarten as well. That and I remember getting flicked in the head by the teacher because I glued the bunny ears together on the Easter basket we were making in art. Unfortunately those are the only two memories I have of my early years in school. However, I went to Pre-K on an Indian Reservation and to kindergarten in Hawaii. Maybe things were different there. And no, I'm not Native American. I have no idea why I went to Pre-K where I did. I'll have to ask my mother.
Oh my gosh, that is so sweet! She's doing a great job! My boys always asked me how to spell the words, so I don't have many notes like this. Treasure it!
So adorable! I never liked naptime until we got to 1st grade and I consistently took naps at my desk after lunch...when we weren't supposed to. I didn't realize how much I needed that break time. My teacher, bless her, let me sleep.
Eli's in Kindergarten too this year. They do naps the first semester if you are in full time. The second semester they cut that out. It IS exciting to see all they learn. I have enjoyed watching Eli learn to read. I'm with you...Kindergarten used to be coloring and building blocks.I didn't learn to read until 1rst grade
I love seeing these things that kids write when they are first learning. I have some fro my kids, that I kept to show them.
tee hee....too cute. I read it all.....until she lost me at "play". :) Sugar just started realling reading this weekend. I am so excited to see her start to write stories. sigh....♥
I teach fourth grade and we don't take naps either! What's up with that? Those Spaniards have go it!
I knew when I read the title without any trouble that I could still hack it as a Year 1 teacher!
A lovely story. Well done, Little One!
this is soooo cute!!!
I totally got it! What a great keepsake! I like her drawings too!
That is precious! I love the spelling of sleep.
