Charleston/Folly Beach getaway!

On Saturday, October 17, Dan and I headed to Charleston to spend a few days resting and relaxing.  It's that time of year when Dan realizes he can't possibly take all 6 weeks of his vacation and his company only allows him to roll over so much, so off we went for a few days!

We stayed in Folly Beach which is about a 20 minute drive to Charleston. The weather was sunny and in the mid 70s but boy was it windy.  The wind kept us off the beach for most of the trip but it sure was nice to wake up to sunrises like this....

We checked into our hotel and immediately sent this photo to the kids:

They were jealous.  But hey!  They send us photos and updates all the time of the fun things they are doing so it's nice to be able to send them some photos.

There is a Catholic church within walking distance of our hotel on Folly Beach so we headed there for the Vigil Mass.  Afterwards we went to dinner at the Bohemian Bull.  Dan and I (Peter got us hooked) track any new beer we try on the Untapped App.  That way we can keep up with what we've had, what we like, how we rate it, etc.  It's a great app if you like to try new beer.  Anyway,  you can post of picture of the beer on the app.  But our pictures of the beer have turned into pictures of our beer with each other in the background so I have a lot of pictures like this on my phone:

After dinner we head to Fam's Brewery to continue watching football and to try another new to us beer.

On Sunday morning after enjoying another beautiful sunrise, we headed to Charleston.

We had no agenda.  We were just going to park and walk around the city.  We've been to Charleston many times and it was nice just to be able to enjoy it with no real plans.

Our first stop was The Battery and of course, we had to get a selfie.

Then we just meandered around taking pictures and enjoying the scenery and the beautiful homes.

We also walked through a park where they were having a vendor fair/farmer's market type thing and a woman was blowing large bubbles for the kids.  I was fascinated by them and tried to get a good picture:

We stopped for lunch at The Peacock.  If you know me, you know I love a good rooftop bar situation.  This place had one and we considered eating our lunch up there, but it was too windy.  So, we opted to eat inside the restaurant.  I got the ribs served on a bed of French fries and it came with a little pitcher of gravy and a delicious garlic aioli.  Give me all the sauces! It was fabulous!

After lunch we headed to the Gibbs Museum of Art. They had three Monets on display.  I love Monet and couldn't be that close without stopping by to see them!   I saw one in Boston in 2011 and blogged about it.

Me in front of Road Near Giverny (which might be as close as I'm ever going to get to Garden in Giverny).

Apple Trees in Bloom

Road Near Giverny

Windmills in Holland
They also had a large Rodin exhibit so we got to check out a lot of his sculptures as well. Rodin is the sculptor who did the Thinker.  That was not on exhibit however. It's permanently located in Paris.

After the museum we continued walking around town.

Then we headed back to Folly Beach and enjoyed the view, some drinks, and some music at the hotel's outdoor bar.

We took some selfies with the sunset before heading to dinner at Taco Boy. We've eaten there before and definitely wanted to eat there again.  So yummy!

Monday morning brought another beautiful sunrise.

After morning coffee, we headed back to Charleston and did a carriage tour.  I also wanted some pictures if front of some of the pretty homes so we did more walking around town.

Then we had lunch at Rudy Royale.  Dan and I have eaten there together before, and Dan has also eaten there on some work trips.  It was delicious as usual.  While we were there, I got a drink off their October menu.

Got to get that new beer in the Untapped App!

I love a good bowl and this one was delicious!

Dracula's Kiss - it was delicious!

After lunch we headed back to Folly Beach.  The wind had finally died down after 2 days so we enjoyed some time on the beach. Dan actually got in.  Not me!  I'm a wimp.  He said the water was warm though.

And we had to get one more drink from the beach bar!

And some sunset photos from the pier.

Then we headed to dinner at Rita's Seaside Grill.

The next morning we enjoyed another beautiful sunrise before it was time to head back to real life.

It was a lovely three nights in Charleston/Folly Beach and I'm so happy we got to spend the time together.
