Italy Day 4, May 14, 2024

We had to say goodbye to our cute little AirBnB in Amalfi today.  It was a little bittersweet as we took our last trek down all those stairs to the street.  But going down with our luggage was much quicker than going up and I will say that after a few days of all those stairs, I felt like my legs were gettingdefinitely getting stronger.  (As an aside, I'm not sure what happens to elderly people when they can no longer handle all the stairs in these coastal cliffs.  And if you were in a wheelchair, what happens?  Amalfi is definitely not handicapped accessible.)

We headed back to the dock and hopped on our ferry and made our way to Salerno.  This ferry ride (unlike our intitial ride to Amalfi) included stops at all the town along the way to pick up and drop off travelers and sightseers. It was nice to see all the little towns from the water one last time.

We made it to Salerno and had a little extra time before our train departed.  Dan and Peter walked to a fort in Salerno while Sarah and I grabbed a coffee and enjoyed the scenery. Dan wanted some pictures in Salerno because his Army Company (the 504th) jumped into Salerno during WWII .

When they got back, we had lunch at Madegra Salerno which is the same place we grabbed the hand pies before hopping on the ferry. This time though, we were able to sit at an actual table and enjoy our meal instead of eating it on the run.

Afterwards we walked to the train station and headed to Rome!  It took about 2 hours to get there on the train.  When we arrived we grabbed a taxi and headed to our AirBnB.  This place was so nice!  It had recently been remodeled and the location was perfect!  We were able to walk to so many things. And, fun fact, Gioachino Rossini, the author of The Barber of Seville, used to live in this exact apartment.  We thought that was cool.

After we checked in, we took a walk to get our bearings around the neighborhood and to grab some breakfast items. The apartment was just a couple of minutes from Piaza Navona so we walked around there as well.

We later went out for dinner at Trenta Quattro and after dinner met up with Joe, Sarah's boyfriend! He also arrived in Rome the same day we did. While we were in Amalfi, he started a summer class through NC State's study abroad program.

It was a long travel day but we were all excited to be in Rome for the second leg of our adventure!

Lunch in Salerno

On the train to Rome!

I kept my bag close at all time apparently.  I had read a lot about pick pockets and purse thieves so I was hyper-vigilant.

Piazza Navone

A street performer in the piazza

Fresh Modern Antiques.  I thought this was funny!

This church was in the piazza and it's called Sant'Agnese and is the sight where early Christian St. Agnes was martyred. Apparently the piazza now sits over Stadium of Domitian which was used for athletic events and public killings.

In front of the Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi (Fountain of the Four Rivers) in the piazza.
The obelisk in the piazza.

Peter and Dan admiring the obelisk.

Our waiter was a hoot and photo bombed us as he was bringing us our wine!

We enjoyed accordion music during dinner.

JOE!!!!!

Such a sweet couple.

Time for bed.  We have to be up early!

What a great location. I love Rome so much. Our apartment was also minutes from Piazza Navonna. So much to see within walking distance!

Beth, I am absolutely loving following along as you write about your amazing trip to Italy! What a dream! And to be able to do it with your kids, before they get too caught up in their grown-up lives and it gets harder to make it happen--you were so forward-thinking, and this will be a wonderful memory for all of you for the rest of your lives!

I am so thrilled that your trip has brought you to Rome! My husband and I had a week-long dream vacation there in 2019, and we stayed in a little VRBO apartment right around the corner from the Pantheon. I just adored Rome, and your pictures are making me homesick for it (Romesick!). My favorite piazza was the Piazza Navona, so I loved seeing your beautiful pictures of that. Enjoy, enjoy! God bless you and your family, and may you have the best time ever!! It looks like the Amalfi part of your vacation was so lovely; but there's just no place like Rome, is there?

I have some catching up to do. This is another busy week prepping for the party and 2 swim meets and Kay turns 12. I'm squeezing in some blog time after our grad video family viewing.

This looks and sounds amazing. I can't wait to go back and see the cliff towns of which you speak. What do those in wheel chairs do? How great that you were able to meet up with Sarah's boyfriend. I want to go to Italy but I'm not sure what I would eat there since I can't do gluten.
